Spain, among the ten countries with the most innovative packaging in the world

With eleven awards, Spain is among the ten countries with the best packaging in the world at the WorldStar Awards 2023, the global packaging competition organised by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO). with record participation (488 entries from 41 countries), the competition has awarded a total of 228 entries, highlighting the innovation, sustainability and quality of the proposals.

The WorldStar Awards are only open to products that have previously won awards in national or continental competitions recognised by the WPO which, in the case of Spain, are the Líderpack Awards organised by Graphispack Asociación and the Hispack trade show at Fira de Barcelona. The country with the most WorldStar awards was Japan (26), followed by Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) – which were presented jointly – (19), India (18), Germany (18), Turkey (14), Austria (13) and China (12). The Spanish packaging, with eleven trophies, has placed eighth in the ranking of distinctions. South Korea (10), Brazil and the Czech Republic (both with 9) round off the top ten.

The winning Spanish entries are: The 8-litre octagonal “Bag in box” packaging for Bezoya water, developed by Smurfit Kappa, which seeks to reduce the amount of plastic and improve palletising and transport; the packaging for Concentralia® ultra-concentrated cleaning products by Salló, which facilitates immediate mixing with water and reduces the environmental impact of plastic waste by up to 10 times; Flexomed’s “Naturtilla” cardboard sandwich pack that incorporates a microwaveable susceptor capable of toasting bread; Autajon Durero Packaging’s “Pack Match Tonic Water” recyclable cardboard basket pack for tonic water; Carobel’s Cosmetics’ Beardburys x Gas Monkey limited edition reusable case that mimics old motor oil cans to contain men’s shaving and hair care products; International Paper’s “Secure E-Box” packaging for e-commerce with the adaptation of side tabs that lock the closure; Font Packaging Group’s “4Liquids”, the only liquid container for shipping made of corrugated board with a capacity of 900 litres; the “Goliath Box” citrus carton that solves stacking, strength and ventilation problems in the supply chain; the “e-Hug” carton protector and stabiliser for e-commerce bottle shipping; and the one-piece separator grid for 6-bottle wine cartons that can be folded and glued in a single process, these last three works by Smurfit Kappa.

In addition to these ten winning entries through the Liderpack Awards, Alzamora Carton Packaging’s “Enovo Egg Carton”, a biodegradable and recyclable solution for containing eggs that provides greater stability, protection and brand visibility, also won an award and was entered through the European Carton Excellence Awards.

The secretary general of the Graphispack Association, Ignasi Cusí, highlighted “the prominence of sustainability in the winning entries, with a predominance of the use of cardboard, the improvement of the user experience of products and the contribution of solutions in different processes in which packaging is becoming increasingly important, such as logistics and e-commerce”. The director of Hispack, Xavier Pascual, pointed out that “Spanish packaging is in a good moment, and its innovation and quality are highly valued at an international level”.

The awards ceremony will take place in Düsseldorf (Germany) on 6 May 2023 at the Interpack trade fair, where the winners in the three new special categories “best gift packaging”, “best digital packaging” and “best accessible packaging” will also be announced, in addition to those of previous years: “best sustainable packaging”; “best packaging to avoid food waste”; “best marketing in packaging”; and the jury president’s award.
